The United Empire of America

by itsyaboichazzzzz

Rome was the most powerful empire of it’s time. They where more technologically, politically, and socially advanced than any other civilization.  At the time, their leaders would have never imagined that they would eventually fall because of how powerful they where, but like every other empire in history, they fell after a thousand years of ruling the eastern world. People now a days compare the US to ancient Rome, going even as far as saying that they are the new Rome just to the West and modernized. I agree with the statement that the US is the new Rome due to the fact that the US is truly an empire, even though we consider it a “democracy. Also the US is “todays Rome” because we are the most powerful nation in the world and make sure everyone knows it, just as Rome was and did. The US might saw we are not an empire but we show and do all the things to be considered. We go into countries who don’y ask for help and make our presence know. In cases like Panama, the US went in giving the locals money and saying they are here to help. Shortly after that the US came right back and demanded their money back, and since Panama spent all the money they couldn’t pay them back so the US completely took over all aspects of Panama socially, politically, and economically. This is an action that only an empire would take and shows that they where similar to Rome. Also today our leaders believe since we are the most powerful right now, we can never be conquered or fall. This ideal was the same for Rome. I believe the US “empire” will fall eventually just as Rome did because it is the way history works. That is why I believe US should be considered the new Rome.

Not Expected Homecoming

by itsyaboichazzzzz

Today their are many issues with soldiers coming home to their loved ones and having relationship issues. The divorce rate is sky rocketing and people don’t understand what is going on. These issues are not only coming up now because they have been seen in classical literature in Homers Odyssey.  When Odysseus finally comes home to Penelope after 20 years, the super happy reunion you would expect didn’t happen. First, when Odysseus comes to Penelope saying he has finally returned, she doesn’t believe a word he says. There is no super happy realization that her loved one was finally home, but instead watching her back for the possibility that he was lying trying to get an in with her. She very slightly tests him and he passes, and then she finally grabs him with love and they have the moment you would expect them to initially have when they first see each other. Still, Odysseus calls her “strange lady” because he hasn’t seen her in 20 years and has no clue what she has done in that time and if she has changed. This causes mistrust between them initially and they both want to know if they did anything that the other would not be happy about during the 20 years. These same feeling of Homecoming are seen in Fallons “Tips for a Smooth Transition” with Evie, who doest know how to act around her husband because he doesn’t want to tick him off, and doesn’t trust him initially. She doesn’t know how he changed while he was at war. The same communication issues Odysseus and Penelope have are similarly seen with Evie and her Husband. Both couples cant seem to have good conversation’s, they just sit around with each other. These are the main issues with divorce now a days and you could see how they have always been part of the homecoming from war.

Family Man Vs. Killer Man

by itsyaboichazzzzz

Achilles is described within the Iliad as a ruthless man who is willing to do anything to win, as well as a good leader. Achilles has no family, except for his army whom he considers his family. It is all he lives for and he only has one life, the life of a army man. Hector on the other hand is portrayed as a great warrior but not nearly as godlike as Achilles. Hector also has two worlds that he very much so distinguishes between, his family life and war life. Hector has a family that he cares for, unlike Achilles. He is fighting to protect them more so then protecting the city of Troy. This is described in the passage when Hector takes off his helmet to say his farewell to his son, making a physical separation from his war life and family life. Hector loves his family much more than anything else in the world and is willing to die against Achilles to protect them. Homer does this to make Hector play a role of a character that the reader sympathizes for. Hector ultimately knows his fate which is to face Achilles in battle to his last breath. All of these factors makes it so the reader feels a deeper connection to Hector because we can relate. Everyone has family and would feel that same way if they where put in Hectors situation, making the reader sympathize for him. Achilles is just a brutal killer looking for blood and glory, Hector is a family man who is fighting for more than glory and himself.

Fake Leaders Vs. True Leaders

by itsyaboichazzzzz

The main similarities between the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles, Sussons “Base Details”, and “Paths of Glory” is the men themselves and the role they play in each war. Agamemnon, the man the narrator describes in “Base Details”, and General Mireau all play the role as the leader who just gives orders, and never takes actions. All of these men don’t care for the soldiers below them and only care for the mission to be accomplished at any cost, even at the lives of all of the men. These men are very “fake leaders” because they only give the orders and never take action. Achilles, the base soldiers in “Base Details” , and Col. Dax are all the men who fight. There is a difference between them because the base soldiers are not leading, only fighting, where Achilles and Col. Dax lead and also fight. The soldiers respect these men unlike the “Fake leaders” because they walk the walk. All of these men also have great respect for the soldiers below them and are willing to give their lives for their fellow soldier. A great example of this is how Achilles and Col. Dax are always at the front of the line when the fight starts. In the movie, Col. Dax is the first to leave the trenches, and because of this and the respect that the men have for him, they follow him with the intention to get the mission done at all costs. These men are “True leaders” because they actually fight along side the men and lead with respect.
