Contemporary Rome

Of course, the Roman Empire and the United States of America flourished at very different periods in time, so the differences between the two are numerous at first glance when you compare the two. But, if you can ignore the differences between time periods, these two “empires”, on the most basic level, are actually very similar. For example, Latin and English, are both languages that are based out of Rome and United States of America, but are spoken around the world because of the power and influence both of these empires have or had on the rest of the world. Jonathan Freedland referred to English as the “latin of its day”. Going even further than just language, the cultures of each empire are also spread around the world. American music, movies, food, and products are all spread further than just the US, they are popular among many countries around the world. Of course, American culture is very different than the culture of the Romans, because of the different time periods and technological advancements at the time. But again, on the most basic level, these “empires” are very similar in the way that both cultures were influential to the rest of the world. If you were to compare the two militaries, obviously they would be very different again because of the technological differences. But the two army’s are actually very similar by the fact that they are both the most powerful army of their time. The army’s strengths are recognized around the world. Despite the technological differences due to the largely different time periods, I believe that the US is actually very similar to the Roman Empire, and it is appropriate to say that the US is the new Rome.
